I enjoy being impressed. Forgive me if this sounds selfish that is not it's intention. I tend to have a critical eye when it comes to many things and over the years I realize this has ruined some experiences for me. On the flip side, however, is the amazingness that comes with being impressed. The pure joy of experiencing something worthy of your attention, of your scrutiny, because it will hold up and surpass your harshest critique and your highest bar.
If it is not already on your "bucket list"...er..."leap list" (I've lost track of what we're calling it now) the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA is worth jotting down. Jotting down, and highlighting, then circling, starring and writing down again, just in case.
For those of your who may not know the requirements for the Tournament of Roses all visible areas of the float must be covered by something from nature. This can include flowers, grasses, seeds, nuts, beans, bark, husks, etc. Image trying to figure out what to use to get that "just right" color. And the scale on which these floats are made. Some are as much as 60 feet long and 35 feet high.
Did you know that poppy seeds when blended yield the right grey color for stonework? Did you know that daisies, slightly wilted, make icing that looks good enough to eat? Did you know there are at least two distinct ways to make peacock tails that will blow your mind? How about that different sizes of coconut can be used to create the look of muscles on a horse?
Here are just a few of my favorite images* from the 2014 Tournament of Rose Parade. Enjoy!
